| Our office undertakes numerous designs for boat launching facilities around the state. These are designed to the guidelines required by the South Australian Boating Facilites Advisory Committee (SABFAC) and are generally for trailable vessels up to about 10m long. Usage for larger vessels may occur at selected tides, or may be a design requirement, for example for a particular charter operator.
Designs are typically undertaken in two stages:
- Concept design - as a cost estimation and discussion tool to provide a broad brush outline of the proposed facility.
- Full design and documentation including detailed design of all components, and may include physical or numerical modelling of the facility to look at current movements, wave penetration or sedimentation problems.
Boat ramp facility designs will generally include elements of the following:
- boat launching ramps, either single or multiple lane.
- vehicle turning and traffic management in an efficient manner.
- car and boat trailer parking to cater for expected patronage.
- breakwater design to protect from effects of waves.
- numerical or physical modelling.
- wave penetration estimation.
- service design (lighting/water/etc.)
- provision for maritime navigation aids.
- dredging and environmental assessments.
- jetty and wharf design for loading/unloading.
- wave height estimation during a peak storm event, to predict usage.
- stormwater runoff, treatment and disposal.
- vessel sullage tank pump out facility.
Boat launching facilities have been designed around the state for local council or resident groups on rivers, lakes and the open coast, all with different design criteria involved.
