Coastal Assesment

Coastal assessments are typically undertaken to understand and take measures against erosion of beaches, coastal flooding or undesired siltation or accumulation of seaweed.

Aerial photography is often used to obtain a view of the beach available over approximately the last 50 years, and sometimes show radical changes in beach alignments with construction of man-made structures.

Other data is often used in assessment of beaches. This may include:

  • historical survey data
  • recent, good quality hydrographic survey data
  • sediment analysis
  • current measurements around the area
  • local knowledge and history
  • numerical or physical models of the area
  • wave data

Methods generally considered for coastal management or remediation may include:

  • Erosion control structures such as seawalls, breakwaters or groynes. These may be made from sand filled bags, rock or steel and concrete.
Gabions are another possible tool, which are rock filled wire baskets.
  • Replenishment measures such as sand carting
  • Control of freshwater runoff and nutrient pollution which may kill or harm local sea flora or fauna, or cause undesirable local changes in the ecology.
