The design of roads and pavements has a number of controlling criteria that must be met:
- The layout of the proposed roadway must be large enough to accommodate the turning circles of the intended vehicles.
- The new road/pavement must be suitable for the loads and vehicles intended for use on it.
- The underlying soil properties and strength must be taken into account in the design.
The type of pavement desired is generally one of the following:
- concrete insitu pavement
- block pavement - concrete or clay
- bitumen pavement
- rubble pavement with no wearing surface
The choice of pavement may depend on cost, or aesthetics, or its performance.
- Collection of stormwater/rain water off the top of the pavement.
- Disposal of that stormwater.
- Matching into existing pavements on buildings around the proposed area.
Hence pavement design generally involves contour grade design, the design of the actual pavement cross-section itself and consideration of water collection and disposal. |
